I’m going to break the Rumpus rule against pop culture here for a minute. (Hell, it’s Saturday.) It’s only to note Gwyneth Paltrow’s complaint, this week, that the New York Times was incorrect in its report that Paltrow used a ghostwriter on her cookbook. I do not care too much about Paltrow’s case, though I suspect that the (alleged!) ghostwriter in question — a woman named Julia Turshen — is having a no-good, very-bad week. I can’t seem to find a comment from her anywhere. In my mind’s eye, she’s sitting in a room twitching somewhere, her contract with Paltrow taped over her mouth.

More than a few Rumpus readers make their living by ghostwriting, I’d guess. It’s not something I’ve done myself, but knowing so many wonderful writers who do it activates my latent mama bear tendencies. Step off, Paltrow. You’re like the boss at the company claiming your underlings don’t exist, all those titanic CEOs claiming they deserve those salaries because they’ve steered the ship well, as though there were no engineers in the boiler room.

Big Important People’s anxiety about ghostwriting is interesting in only a limited way. Paltrow’s skittish need to run all over the media this week declaring sole authorship is not based in legitimate concern, as far as I can see. There may be a few fans out there in the world who believe these big book products to be little vials of captured sweat, drawn direct from the source’s brow. But they are few. For the rest of us, these products are something we can put on an e-reader and read, and/or use to whip up a little gluten-free macrobiotic lime-rosemary focaccia, before we have to dive back into To the Lighthouse. So the culprit here is ego, a celebrity who worries that any chip in her varnish will bring the whole house down. How exhausting it must be to be that kind of person.

Well, this past weekend, The Mail and The Mirror reported that Ryan Gosling was in South Africa, “taking a break” from Eva Mendes. According to the reports, he was seen out with a German model. The story seemed sketchy in general, but added to the simple fact that Ryan seems pretty locked down in Bangkok while he films a movie… yeah, the report was BS. Eva’s rep ended

up denying the story. I tend to think that Eva and her team are the ones pushing many of the tabloid stories about this relationship, and I took Eva’s denial as a confirmation of that. Eva is selling us something. And I wouldn’t put it past her to be the source for part (or all) of this story in Us Weekly:

The Ryan Gosling workout secrets exposedThe Ryan Gosling workout routine consists of 4-8 repetitions of incline bench press, weighted wide grip dips, pull ups for the chest, abs and back muscles and hanging leg raises with cable rows for strengthening leg muscles and shaping up the abs and back muscles. For the arms, shoulders and intervals he does 4-8 repetitions of seated dumbbell shoulder press, standing dumbbell curls and skull crushers. 3-10 repetitions of lateral raises and Bent over rear delts help strengthen his shoulder, arms and side muscles for that V-taper and the lean muscular look.
His exercise routine has been stretched out over a week’s period with resting days in between. The range should be between 5-12 repetitions per set.

The Ryan Gosling workout routine in combination with a nutritious low calorie and low carb diet has helped Ryan achieve the photoshop abs, a very lean waistline and the muscular frame. All I can say to Eva Mendes is GET IT GURL! With a hot man like Ryan Gosling, why would you want to leave his side … whether it be for 6 days, 6 weeks or 6 months, I do not blame her IN THE LEAST for sticking by his side while he films his new movie in Thailand. It’s unclear how much longer the pair will stay overseas but I fully expect when they return to the US they will be arriving TOGETHER. Ah, young love … ain’t it grand?

While most of us realize that Ryan Gosling is an attractive man and a good actor, who knew he would be so good at nonprofit communications?

Hi Kivi,

I acted on another of the tips in your writing prompts email from a couple weeks ago. Our organization is dedicated to a world without CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome). Laura Hillenbrand, author of bestseller “Unbroken,” has CFS and has been a long-time supporter. She made a substantial gift that we announced last week. As a token of our deep appreciation, I’ve been trying to figure out something fun and meaningful to send her. She has simple tastes and a wicked sense of humor. (I’ve known her for 12 years and say this with some confidence.)

I noted the Ryan Gosling meme in your recent tips list. Laura is a consultant on the “Unbroken” screenplay. She hopes that Ryan Gosling will be cast in the role of protagonist Louie Zamperini for his likeness to Louie, his acting skills and his likability. I also happen to know she thinks he’s hot.

So, acting on your tip (one of many that has inspired action!), I made her an “Unbroken”-themed “Hey Girl” booklet. She loved it, posted the pages on her personal Facebook page where it got lots of “likes” and appropriately deserved lewd comments from men and women alike. It made her very happy. So thank you for the inspiration — AGAIN!

So Ryan Gosling and I were talking last night (he hates it when I write about him and he would die if he knew I posted these photos, so don't tell him!) Anyway, I was saying that I think we should name our babies in alliteration, like in my family, you know: Kim, Keri, Kelly, Kady and Kasey. My sister Kasey did it with Miles, Murphy and Miyo. Why shouldn't we?
Anyway Ryan Gosling was like, "Kady.  I thought we talked about this.  You said you don't even want kids.  Why do you always have to name the babies we're never going to have, and then tell me all the stuff you're never going to let them do, and then talk about how they're going to be forced to do tap lessons?  It's like, either you want them or you don't.  I'm so confused." and blah blah blah.

The Ides of March - Ryan Gosling interview

RYAN Gosling talks about playing political campaign strategist Stephen Myers in George Clooney’s The Ides of March (out on Blu-ray and DVD on Monday, March 5, 2012) and working with George Clooney (and trying to avoid his pranks).
He also talks about his career to date, why receiving a compliment from Brad Pitt is amazing to him, and why he’s working with Blue Valentine‘s Derek Cianfrance again (in a film that will give Bradley Cooper fans a big surprise).
Q. What can you tell about your character Stephen Myers, that young idealist campaign strategist working for a democrat governor hoping to gain the nomination of his party in the next presidential race?
Ryan Gosling: I think he is well intended and wants to affect the changes in the country and he is faced with that moral dilemma with his candidate [played by George Clooney ], and so he does the dishonourable thing, which is to jump ship so he can eventually get into the White House and affect change. He severs his heart from his brain at a certain point and struggles and fails to connect.
Q. How toxic do you think it is to be involved in politics and power?
Ryan Gosling: Pretty toxic even though I was not that involved in the world itself. Just the filming. The thing I like about the film is that it’s set in this political world but you don’t really need to know much about politics in order to enjoy it. It could be set in Hollywood or on Wall Street for that matter.
Q. Do you see a parallel in the movie with Hollywood? Is it hard to keep ones integrity through the process and to make it?
Ryan Gosling: I think it’s very hard to be honest for the jobs. You can’t really tell the truth because everything you say is cut off, taken out of context. You have to be careful about what you say. So, I related in the character in that way.
Q. Did you ask George why he chose you?
Ryan Gosling: Well, he said he chose me because everyone else said no! No one else was available! But that’s fine with me.
Q. Did you see his previous films as a director?
Ryan Gosling: Yes and I loved them. It’s interesting: I was on a plane right before I went to do The Ides of March. In the classics category for movies on the little screen in the seat, there were five: 2001, Citizen Kane, Good Night, and Good Luck and 2 others. And I thought whoa. With only having made three others, he’s made an impact. More than anything I love his television shows. Unscripted was incredible… the style and originality. Very experimental. So strange. And K Street is one of my favourites.
Q. Describe George Clooney as a director…
Ryan Gosling: Well, he’s very specific and he knows exactly what he wants. There are not a lot of ambiguity in his decisions and directions.

Q. How different is it to be directed by a director who is also an actor?
Ryan Gosling: It did not feel that different. When he was directing, he was able to kind of compartmentalize to a degree which was interesting. But he was doing so much you know. It’s his project. He co-wrote it, directed it, produced it, and starred in it. At the same time he is checking the situation in Darfur on his cell phones. And he has 20… at least 10 practical jokes in the works at all time. Multi-tasking you know!
Q. George’s inspiration was some of the iconic seventies films like Network, The Candidate or All The President’s Men. Did he ask you to watch those or others to get a feel of what he wanted?
Ryan Gosling: Actually, he didn’t. He had us watch a lot of documentaries not those films. He didn’t specifically ask although he referenced them a lot while we were making it. I guess he just assumed we had seen them and did not want to live in a world where we hadn’t!
Q. He is famous for playing pranks. How did you deal with it? Did you have to be on the alert all the time?
Ryan Gosling: Yes, you do have to be on the alert all the time.
Q. Did he get you?
Ryan Gosling: Yes, he did.
Q. Did you get him back?
Ryan Gosling: No. It’s impossible.
Q. What do you think the reaction for the public and political world to Ides of March will be?
Ryan Gosling: I have no idea. I don’t think George was making a political statement or that the movie has a political message but I do think he was interested in starting a dialogue. And it will be interesting to see what that dialogue is.

Q. What does the poster represent for you? Those two faces, yours and George’s characters kind of blending…maybe means that in the end, it doesn’t really matter who is the president?
Ryan Gosling: No, it says that George Clooney is trying to show how much better looking he is! My mother saw that and called me. She was so excited and said: “You are on the cover of Time magazine”! But I told her it was just the poster for the movie!
Q. Do you trust the press?
Ryan Gosling: Huh… No.
Q. How different is it for you as an actor to play a silent type character like in Drive, compared with Ides of March where you have so much dialogues? What do you like more as an actor?
Ryan Gosling: They were different experiences and each offered something different. A kind of balance. I feel there is something nice about not talking. Like you can say more by actually saying less. It’s nice to have space in the film and the silence. So, it’s much rarer to be able to work that way. I enjoyed it.
Q. How was it working with Nicholas on Drive?
Ryan Gosling: We are just wildly different guys but I think we share a brain. I’ll have an idea and he’ll have the exact same idea. When we first met, I had the feeling that the film should be about driving and not about driving fast but just the actual experience of driving, sitting in your car listening to music. The first thing he said to me was that this movie should be about a guy driving around in a car around listening to music. The only way he knows how to feel and I thought how can I be so different from this person and at the same time we are sharing the same dream? Right now we are trying to exploit that

A new house with the Ryan Gosling

So, 2 nights ago, I unexpectedly received a call from our realtor telling me that we would be closing on the house yesterday.
We weren’t expecting to close until sometime during the second week of March because we were a little short on the closing costs, but turns out, the sellers wanted to sell so badly that they fronted the payment and last night, at 6pm, we became homeowners again!
I can not even tell you what a relief it is. We were beginning to wonder if it would ever happen and I’m certain my parents were beyond done with having us living them….
So, tomorrow, we begin slowing moving out of my parent’s home and into our new home (pictures to come).
If you notice me missing, you now know why…
I’m busy painting, moving furniture, hanging pictures and just getting our life back on track again.
