Ryan Gosling is the Canadian entertainment newsmaker of the year

By Jay Stone

Ryan Gosling has had just about the best year imaginable. True, he wasn’t named the sexiest man alive by People magazine, but he got something even better than that: George Clooney teased him about it. “He’s been training and working so hard for it, Ryan Gosling has, he really wants it,” said Clooney, a bit of man-to-man kidding that implicitly welcomes Gosling into that ironic club — comprising Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and friends — that sits at the top of Hollywood royalty.

He made a film with Clooney, Ides of March, whose poster showed both their faces on the cover of Time magazine. Gosling said his mother phoned when she saw it. “She called me and was so excited, saying, ‘You’re on the cover of Time magazine.’ I had to say, ‘No, it’s just the poster for the movie, ma.’”

This is exactly the kind of story that gives Gosling a boyish sex appeal that extends beyond his off-kilter good looks and toned body, although they seem to be working pretty well for him, too: He always seems to be dating one or another of the world’s most desirable women (Eva Mendes as of this writing, but it’s only December). He’s both a heartthrob and a highly respected actor, and there appears to be nothing but blue skies ahead.
